My Little Creeper

I go a little crazy with birthdays--always have. I can't help it; it's just a part of who I am. I think I inherited this gene from my mother because she always made a big deal out of ours. Anyway, I am consistently unlucky in terms of the "themes" my children pick for their birthdays. It's never anything normal or easy. It's never anything commercialized where you can buy the theme plates and party decorations. And I'll be honest and say it's a pain in the ass. But..I do it anyway because it's what they want and I'm not smart enough to talk them into something else. :)

So..my Willy turns 9 tomorrow and requested a "Minecraft Party." He is crazy into this Minecraft game right now along with his big brother and most of his friends. If you're unfamiliar, it's a survival game where you have to harvest a bunch of stuff to build a shelter that will protect you from creepers, zombies, skeletons and large jumping spiders. There are no Minecraft paper plates with matching cups and decor--ofcourse!! As of yesterday the only thing I had pulled together was the cake which is a large green Creeper. That was it--seriously. I started to panic, so I went on YouTube to watch videos of other Minecraft parties. That was a bad idea--very bad! Holy intimidating! This one video really blew me away..it is the PERFECT Minecraft party: http://youtu.be/D41l3OlyXAU

I wanted to duplicate this party exactly, but there was just no way with 24 hours to prepare. I had to accept the fact that mine wasn't gonna be this good, and that's okay. So..I got up this morning and ran all around town collecting boxes, poster board, rocks, gems, candy, etc. I gave it my best effort and it will be what it will be. The plan is this: Guests arrive (12 boys) and go straight to the "Crafting Table" to decorate a Pickaxe and Sword. They will then harvest a piece of wood off the tree on the wall and go outside to hit a PiƱata filled with coal. (They need wood and coal in the game.) Next they will go on a treasure hunt in the backyard to search for gold, diamond, lapis-lazuli, obsidian, clay, iron, wood, sand and rock. They will turn these items in for a prize (a green flashlight, a Minecraft pin and a Minecraft bookmark.) Next they will decorate their own Creeper Heads. We will eat lunch, have some Creeper cake and open presents. They will fill their Creeper goodie bags with candy that resembles items from the game. That's it; that's all I got. I walked Will through the party plan tonight before bed and he said, "this is gonna be the best birthday party ever!" And that giant smile on his face reminded me of why I do it. :)

Here are some pictures of the party set up if you're interested:

  1. I knew you would do it and that it would be very good. It'll be a really good party and Will will have a ball. You scored big again.

  2. You are a superwoman! I'm so proud of you for pulling it all together and making his little dreams come true. Did you sleep all weekend?! This Mama is not nearly as motivated...my kids suggest a theme and then I veto any ideas that are way too complicated!
